The archive of the expeditions carried out by PharmaMar includes over 95,000 marine samples of the areas with highest biodiversity in the world.
This sample library is composed of macroorganisms, basically invertebrates, algae and urochordates (tunicates); and microorganisms such as bacteria, actinomycetes and marine fungi.
The collection campaigns are performed by the Expeditions Department, comprising marine biologists and professional divers. The collection is made manually and selectively using aqualung systems and respecting the protected organisms in each area. This research activity is in harmony with the basic principle of conservation and sustainability in the use of biodiversity, as expressed in article 1 of the Rio de Janeiro Convention.
PharmaMar has created a collaboration network to speed up research into its collection of potentially active agents. This network includes marine biology and biochemical centres, which have facilitated access to marine samples (microorganisms and macroorganisms), as well as world-class basic and clinical science researchers.
